Aleksandra Govorova pārlikums vīru korim/ Male Chorus version by Aleksandr Govorov

The special spiritual quality emanating from Orthodox sacred music by virtue of the harmony created in the union of Word and Music has always evoked great interest in listeners from Latvia and the world over. To witness are yearly concerts given by visiting Russian choirs that are well attended in churches and concert halls, as well as the experience of „Gaudeamus”, Male choir of the Riga Technical University, performing its first ever program of Orthodox sacred music in numerous venues throughout Latvia.

The Male choir „Gaudeamus” has premiered performances in Latvia of one of the great masterpieces of choral literature in the world –„Vespers”, written in 1915 by Sergey Rachmaninoff and then rearranged for male choir by conductor and composer Alexander Govorov of St.Petersburg.

Rachmaninoff himself considered this to be one of his best works. One is hard pressed to find argument with this assertion. Even though the work was not written for liturgical use, the synthesis of canonic Easter text with the composer’s broad musical vision, as well as the somber historical context (World War I, Russian Civil War) has created a true musical monument, one that certainly leaves both its listeners and performers a certain sense of spiritual value.

Mīlestībā viļņo krūts (2008)
Juris Kulakovs / Eduards Veidenbaums

Every composer perceives things within the framework of his/her own distinctive palette. By commissioning new works we seek out that which is unique to each of them. We have been drawn to the melodic line and masculinity in the music of Edgars Račevskis, who is completely fluent in the media of male choir, and to the Byzantine Slavic dramatic serenity of Andrejs Selickis, the inimitable harmonic colors and emotionality of Maija Einfelde…
Three composers, the heroes of this recording, are of the same generation and have one thing in common - they seem to identify with the worlds of “pop” music and jazz. The works presented here share something essentially masculine, a condition particularly evident each Spring when Maleness awakens in pursuit of absolute values – Sensuality, Pleasure, Hunger for life, Dreams, Beauty, Love and Wine. And so I would hope that the roughly hewn, folky robustness of Praulinš, elegantly twisting melody of Pūce and deceptively easy writing style of “rhythm twister” Gotham is a guarantee that this first recording of contemporary Latvian music for male choir won’t collect dust on store shelves. Or our memory…

* - first recording

This album includes music from the Orthodox music program, featuring four new works by Latvian Orthodox composer Andrejs Salickis – “Introductory Psalms”,” My Soul Cries”, “Sunrise Hymn for Maundy Thursday” and “Resurrection Hymns”.
Absolute consonance and harmony of Word and Music characterize concert performances of these songs in Latvia, Australia and United States, where unaccompanied male voices have given audiences a musical gift of peaceful joy.
The enormously enthusiastic and warm response confirmed the conviction that this program must be released in CD format, in order for the unique synthesis of Baltic and Orthodox which is so characteristic of A. Selicki's music to make its deserved mark, alongside more protestant-like interpretations of Orthodox classics (D.Bortnanskij, P.Chesnokov, A.Lvov and G. Izvekov), in the body of Latvian music.
